SB-1424 Internet (Sen. Dem Richard Pan): social media: false information: strategic plan.

California Senator Democrat Richard Pan puts before the assembly SB-1424 Internet.

“This bill would require any person who operates a social media, as defined, Internet Web site with a physical presence in California to develop a strategic plan to verify news stories shared on its Web site. The bill would require the plan to include, among other things, a plan to mitigate the spread of false information through news stories, the utilization of fact-checkers to verify news stories, providing outreach to social media users, and placing a warning on a news story containing false information.”

Without going into all the details at this point, mainly because there aren’t any; this bill, if it were to pass as is, will be left to the courts to figure out and decide what any of this means.

Obviously, the fact (no pun intended) that Mr. Pan actually thought this up and moved it forward is well totalitarian, Orwellian, northkoreanesque, unconstitutional and unbelievable.

Questions: “Internet Web site with a physical presence in California” – we would assume that means a California business with a physical address that also maintains a web presence. It raises unknown questions about all others like the rogue author sitting in a Starbucks in Los Angeles posting web content stories, news, opinion, social commentary from their smartphone.

And we could go down the list – strategic plan, news stories, “mitigate”, false information.
Certainly, this Gestapo-like thought-crime group called the “fact checkers”, the verification police, enter into the equation.
